Winter Break Survival: Two Weeks of Indoor Days

2 weeks · 10 days planned · free

Winter break is shorter than summer but harder in one specific way: everyone is indoors, at the same time, often in bad weather, frequently overstimulated from whatever holiday just happened.

This plan is built for that. Every day has one quiet printable for the morning and one anchor activity, weighted toward calm rather than energy — because the problem in December is rarely boredom, it is everyone being wound up in a small space.

Week 1 — Wind down

Quiet, indoor, low-stimulation days.

  1. Day 1

    Slow start

    • Colour a bear page with hot chocolate
    • No screens before lunch
  2. Day 2

    Reset the routine

    • Build a holiday routine chart together — later wake-up, same bedtime
  3. Day 3

    Quiet hands

    • Cutting practice with straight lines
    • Make paper chains from the strips
  4. Day 4

    Reading day

    • Start a reading log
    • Twenty minutes of reading, adult reads too
  5. Day 5

    Animals indoors

    • Colour the farm animals sheet
    • Make the sound of each one

Week 2 — Wind back up

Rebuilding the school-morning habit before term starts.

  1. Day 6

    Back to letters

    • Lowercase alphabet tracing
    • Write one word they choose
  2. Day 7

    Screen-time reset

    • Fill in a screen time chart together for the coming week
  3. Day 8

    Their own name

    • Name tracing
    • Label everything going back to school
  4. Day 9

    Pack the bag

    • Fill in a packing list for the first day back
    • Actually pack it
  5. Day 10

    Morning rehearsal

    • Run the morning routine chart once, for real, at the school time

Running it for real

  • Week two is the useful half. Rebuilding the morning habit two or three days before term beats doing it cold on the first morning.
  • Keep bedtime fixed even when wake-up drifts. It is the wake-up time that is hard to move back, not the bedtime.
  • The paper-chain day is deliberately the third: by then the novelty of being off has worn through and hands need something to do.
