What it builds

Tracing removes the planning load from writing: the child only has to control the pencil, not also decide where the line goes. That isolation is what makes it effective, and why it comes before free writing.

How to use it

• •Try finger-tracing the shape first — it builds the motor memory faster than going straight to a pencil.
• •Stop before frustration rather than after. A sheet abandoned in tears teaches that this kind of task ends badly.
• •If a child struggles with a specific letter, check which pre-writing stroke it needs and practise that instead.
