Print Awareness

Print awareness is a child's understanding that written text carries meaning and follows rules — that English runs left to right and top to bottom, that words are separated by spaces, and that a book has a front and a back.
It develops entirely through exposure to books and text, not through worksheets. A child gains it by being read to while seeing the page, by watching an adult follow the words with a finger, and by noticing print in the world.
It is a strong predictor of later reading success and it precedes letter knowledge. A child can name every letter and still lack print awareness, which shows up later as difficulty understanding what reading is for.
