Numeracy
One-to-One Correspondence
Also called: 1:1 correspondence, counting correspondence
One-to-one correspondence is the understanding that each object counted matches exactly one number word β the difference between reciting "one two three" and actually counting three things.
A child who can recite numbers to twenty may still not have it. The tell is watching them count a row of objects: if the pointing and the counting drift out of sync, or they recount the same item, the number sequence is memorised rather than understood.
It develops through physical counting of real objects. Number tracing worksheets teach numeral recognition β knowing that the symbol "5" is called five β which is a genuinely different skill and does not build correspondence at all.
