Positive Reinforcement

Also called: reward-based behaviour support

Positive reinforcement is adding something desirable immediately after a behaviour to make that behaviour more likely to recur β€” a sticker after a completed chore, or specific praise after sharing.

Timing and specificity carry most of the effect. Reinforcement delivered immediately works; delivered at the end of the week it mostly does not, because a young child does not connect the two. "You put your plate in the sink without being asked" works better than "good job".

The counterpart is that removing a previously-given reward is not reinforcement at all β€” it is punishment, and it reliably causes children to disengage from the system entirely.
