How many tasks to put on it

Two to four per day for ages four to seven; four to six for eight to twelve. The most common way a chart fails is being built on a Sunday evening with twelve rows on it. A child who cannot complete the chart on a good day learns that the chart is not winnable, and disengages within about a fortnight.

Never make it subtractable

Add for success; never remove a sticker already earned. The moment a chart can go backwards it becomes a record of failure rather than progress, and children stop engaging with it entirely. Handle setbacks separately from the chart.

Chart actions, not dispositions. “Put your plate in the sink” works. “Have a good attitude” is not something a six-year-old can tick off, and putting it on a chart guarantees a bad week shows up as a blank row.

Retire it when it works

A chart is scaffolding for a habit, not a permanent fixture. Once the routine holds without it, take it down — leaving it up converts an established internal habit back into an external transaction, which is measurably worse than never having used one.
